Come out and strut your mutt this Sunday for the Portage Lions Club's annual "Walk For Dog Guides." Spokesperson Wilf Schellenberg says they've laid out a course along the lake shore, starting from the Lions Den near Splash Island, and folks are welcome to bring their dogs along for the walk. Schellenberg notes all funds raised go to the Lions Foundation of Canada, which has a dog training school in Oakville, Ontario. He says dogs are trained and supplied at no cost to people in need of a service animal, including dogs for the blind or vision impaired and hearing-ear dogs for the hearing impaired.

Schellenberg adds they also train service dogs for people with physical or medical disabilities, seizure response dog guides for folks with epilepsy, and comfort animals for autistic children between the ages of three and twelve. He says they even have dogs who recognize low or dropping blood sugar levels in folks with severe diabetes, noting the animals will alert people if someone is in crisis.

Schellenberg says registration begins at nine o'clock on Sunday morning and they hope to be finished with the event by noon. If you'd like to make a pledge or offer a donation, you can find more information by going on-line to "Walk For Dog Guides.com." He adds anyone who'd like to contribute or participate in the walk is welcome to join them in Island Park on Sunday.
