A trend of less than ideal weather conditions over the Victoria Day Long Weekend will continue this year, but we're in for a treat compared to 2015. That's according to Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Natalie Hassel, who says we'll be seeing some clouds and rain later in the weekend.

"We have a system coming in from Alberta which is what's bringing that increase in cloud. We'll see a 60 per cent chance of showers in the evening and night period on Sunday, probably starting sometime in the early morning because we're going to see showers all day on Monday, going into the night."

However, the weather forecast isn't all bad news. Hassel says we're going to experience above average temperatures and a clear sky to kick off the weekend.

"At least it will be nice on Saturday and Sunday, quite sunny actually on Saturday and the beginning of Sunday. If you're going to spend time outside, take all of the precautions you would normally take in the summer months, wear a hat, have sun protectant, have water and a plan to access a cooler location if it ends up being too hot."

While you'll need an umbrella toward the end of the weekend, Hassel says we're going to be seeing much better conditions compared to last year, which saw inclement weather across the province.

"Luckily it's not nearly as bad as what we lived through last May long weekend, where we had everything from blizzards, to freezing rain, to severe thunderstorms during that weekend. At least, by comparison, this is actually really nice. We're getting two days out of the three, so plan accordingly, make sure you have what you need, and stay safe out there."

She says the rain could be a benefit in Manitoba, where several areas have implemented burning bans due to the dry conditions throughout the province.
