Farmers in the Central Plains could be hitting the fields a little earlier than expected thanks to the suddenly surging temperatures.

Portage GO Office Farm Production Advisor Shawn Cabak says the improving weather conditions across southern Manitoba may have some re-thinking their schedules and planting tactics. The current weather is advancing the field conditions by up to 2 to 3 weeks. Cabak suggests a few may be thinking of getting active on their field activity within the next few weeks, as early seeding leads to a better yield.

As for the quick melt possibly causing flooding concerns, Cabak says the below average snowfall amounts during the winter have minimized the potential issues that could have been seen in the majority of local fields.  But he says there are still concerns out there over  possible problems with soil erosion and a lack of moisture reserves.
