You many have noticed the water from your taps may be smelling a little more chlorinated over the past few days.

City of Portage Water Works Committee Chair Wayne Wall explains it's still perfectly safe to drink.

"There is a little extra chlorine in the water and it's just a little more than we normally put in. The water always has a certain level of chlorine for disinfection, that's regulation by law in Manitoba, but there was a little problem with the bypass valve on the chlorinator last night, so there's a little bit extra in the system at the moment."

Wall believes the bypass valve problem occurred a couple of nights ago, and they've done everything by the book to ensure safety.

"I've been talking to the Water Plant and they tell me when anything out of the ordinary happens we notify the local provincial drinking water officer and that's been done. He's satisfied everything is safe and under control.

He adds it's just a matter of time until it works its way out of the system."
