Children of Portage la Prairie are benefitting from last month's wrestling show at Stride Place.

A $1,000 cheque was presented to ROK Central (Recreation Opportunities for Kids) executive director Lynne Parker Wednesday, and she's excited at the continuing support from the community.

"Getting contributions from different events like this in the community is huge for us. All of our programming we do is all through fundraising, we don't get funds to run programs like the summer camp, and all of the programs we run and offer for the kids is all free of charge for them. There's no charge for any of our programs that the kids come to, and we always try to have a healthy snack there too."

Parker says along with the $1,000 cheque, they also made $500 off their 50/50 draw at the event. Which she says will go a long way for young ones in Portage.

"These funds will go to help kids get registered for sports or activities. It could go toward supplies for some of the programs we have. If they need help to purchase some equipment for whatever they're doing. Right now we have an eight-week summer camp program at the BDO Centre. We've got 38 kids registered and this is our first week, and we've been pretty much at capacity for the week."

Parker says the camp program had 12 kids four years ago and has now blossomed to an astounding 40 kids for the week. She adds running ROK can be a little costly but that's what they feel is needed for our community.
