Three local 4-H Beef Clubs had their moment in the spotlight at the Portage Ex Saturday.

The annual 4-H Steer Sale took place at 5 p.m. with the Grand Champion Steer being sold first, followed by the Reserve Steer Champion. First time Oakville 4-H Club member Brock Sigurdson's steer was named Grand Champion. Cindy Jack's steer was named the Reserve Steer Champion and the Home Grown Steer as well.

"It feels awesome," says Jack. "I've done a lot through my breeding program to produce these steers that will come out. He also won the Home Grown Steer so it feels awesome to see my genetics playing a part in feeding the world."

Fellow Oakville 4-H member Jonathan Karsin says the Portage Fair is one of the best he's been to and he's always enjoyed the 4-H club.

"I get to meet so many new people and have a lot of fun at fun events. I've been a member for a long time and I really love the club."

Every year one local charity is picked to receive one per cent of the sales from the auction, and this year it's going to Portage Service for Seniors.

"I was so surprised when I was contacted about receiving these funds," says executive director Shelley Caskey. "It's really awesome because it'll help us keep programming going for seniors in our community."

"If we have a 1200 pounder, it can average around $3 per pound so they can get up to $3,600 per animal," says Portage 4-H member Layne Coltart. "I've really enjoyed growing up with cattle, and showing them off is one of my passions so this event is great. I like to watch the calf go from 50 pounds at birth to a 1200 pounder at the sale."

There was a lot going on at the Portage Ex throughout the day. It wraps up Sunday afternoon. Check out more pictures below.
