The RM of Portage la Prairie's received some complaints about creek and ditch blockage caused by problems extending back to the 2011 flooding.

Kevin Yuill's a local farmer who presented his concerns to Council this week.

"We still haven't had our ditches cleaned out that were messed up in 2011. We spoke to them a couple of times, and I believe it's the province that should be responsible, because it's from the lake and diversion flooding. So, we brought that up, and some of our creeks need to be cleaned out."

Yuill explains flooded land prohibits farming on it, costing them money each year. However, he has another concern.

"My bigger concern is the salinity rising because the water's not able to move and get away. That's long term degradation of the land. Salinity is salt content in the ground, and a little is fine. But as the water table climbs, generally so does the salt level. Once you get over about three parts per million, stuff doesn't grow well."

He adds, "We left it in their hands, and hopefully they can find whoever needs to get it done and get it done. It was not the first time that it's been brought up. I'll put it that way. Hopefully they'll find the right people and get it done. That's all. We're not the only ones. There's quite a few people who are in the same boat."

Reeve Kam Blight says Council's determined to help resolve the situation.

"It's something that's ongoing. The blockage that was spoken of by one of the individuals was actually something that happened in the springtime or a little earlier on. There's a lot of debris that flows down through the ditches and certain creeks, and sloughs, etc. There are also beavers that create a lot of problems and blocking off water. So, it's an ongoing battle for us, and it's just something we're trying to do our best to address."
