At Mix 96, we know there are some fine young athletes in our area. And we want to recognise these great people. What makes a sports star of the month? It could be a great performance where an athlete exceeded all expectations. Or it could be someone who displays great sportsmanship every time they play. A coach that goes above and beyond. Or maybe even a volunteer behind the scenes who makes it all happen. That's what the Sports Star of the month from Boston Pizza Portage and the P.R.R.A are all about.
Every month, Mix 96 will pick a deserving winner from a list of people nominated by.....you! And we'll recognise that person not only on this page but with a $100 gift card from the fine folks at Boston Pizza, Portage. It's the place to go before or after the game and is awesome for team events. The winner will also receive a one-month youth active membership to Stride Place from the PRRA. Want to be a future sports star? This is the place to go for all your exercise needs and more.
Both Jared and Brett Vachon are dedicated to their sport of competitive swimming. Since the closure of the Shindleman Aquatic Centre in October 2016, both boys travel to Brandon to swim with the Bluefins three times a week while maintaining good grades. Jared and Brett were recognized as top swimmers in their respective age groups with the Bluefins and continue to excel in the pool. Jared and Brett will both compete in Junior Provincials June 23 - 25 in Winnipeg. Jared Vachon will also represent Portage la Prairie for Man/Sask, also held at the Pan Am Pool this July. Congratulations on all of your hard work and dedication!
Paige Shwaluk is a gritty player and fantastic teammate to those on the baseball field. Paige and her teammates made history, being the only team at PCI to capture their fourth straight Zone 4 Championship. She is also a multi-sport athlete, winning Hardest Working Player and Top Assists during the Saints hockey season. Congrats Paige!
Jana Laing is April's Sports Star of the Month! Jana is a hardworking volleyball player on the U17 Bisons Club Team who puts her team first. She has a positive mindset and continues to be a student of the game using every opportunity and experience to learn. Congratulations on all your hard work Jana!

The latest athlete to join the ranks as a Sports Star of the Month is Kate Moggey! Kate was nominated for her hard work and dedication to Sapphire's gymnastic team, spending numerous extra hours working to improve her skills. If that wasn't enough, Kate also steps aside from her own training to help younger gymnasts. Congrats again to Kate Moggey, the latest Sports Star of the Month.
For the month all about the love, we loved to hear the story of Zoe Murray. Zoe was anxiously awaiting for the basketball season to begin and join her teammates on the court. Unfortunately, that didn't happen as she broke her arm and dislocated her elbow before she could even play a game. Most would choose to then take it easy and stay home but not Zoe, she started showing up to practices and all of the games to sit on the sidelines and cheer on her friends. For her love of the sport and dedication to being there even when she can't be on the court, Zoe Murray is a well deserving Sports Star of the Month. Congrats :)
We kicked 2017 off with a bang with our latest Sports Star of the Month, Garon Blanchard!! Garon plays for the AA Central Plains Capitals as one of their goalies and has been hitting the ice each and every time with an impeccable attitude towards the game. He also is a leader for his team and knows it's not an individual effort out there, but a team effort which he instils in each and every time he's between the pipes. Hard work, dedication and a commitment to being a great teammate? Sounds like a Sports Star to me! Congrats to Garon Blanchard.
It was an easy choice to select Jada Wieler as our final Sports Star of the Month for 2016. Jada plays basketball at Westpark School and has led her team to a number of amazing accomplishments. The crowning moment of her career thus far saw her lead the team to a second place finish at the MHSAA Provincials just last year. It's crazy to think almost none of this happened as Jada only signed up to play once the team was short and needed players. Obviously, she's quite glad she chose to play and so is her coach Mr Brewer, who says she practically a second coach out on the court. For all her amazing accomplishments and dedication to her craft, Jada Wieler is December's Boston Pizza Sports Star of the Month.
Our first ever Sports Star of the Month could not have been any more deserving of that honour. Kaiden Banfield is a multi-sports athlete who competes in volleyball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, track and football! It was his play on the football field with the Pitbulls and his 7 medal performance at the MB Summer Games that led Kaiden being not only nominated but selected as Mix's first Sports Star. Congratulations to Kaiden, keep up the good work
