Anita Elsie Peters (nee Shier)

With sadness we announce the passing of Anita Peters. With family by her side, Anita passed away on the morning of February 23, 2024, at Lions Prairie Manor, Portage la Prairie at the age of 75.

Anita was born March 22, 1948, to Andy and Olga Shier of Winnipeg MB. She grew up with her two sisters, Marilyn and Beverley, in the Elmwood Area, graduating from MBCI in 1966. Anita always had a passion for art and completed a fine arts/education degree from the University of Manitoba.
In her early adult life, Anita enjoyed traveling and was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel across Canada and to Europe with close friends and family.
Once her travels were complete, Anita and George were married (April 1976) and settled down on the farm where they raised their two children Jason and Allison. Anita often remarked she was never able to have a dog when growing up in the city and now living in the country, she was never without one by her side. While George farmed, Anita always stayed busy whether she was preparing meals or meticulously maintaining the yard and her numerous flower and vegetable gardens. Anita was also a talented seamstress and made many of her own, and her children’s clothes. With her gifted hands she even sewed her own wedding dress.

Many summers were spent at her family’s cottage in Gimli, MB. And despite a busy farm life, Anita and George still made time to take their children on camping and ski trips out west.

Anita’s faith was foundational in all aspects of her life. She was raised in a Christian home and instilled these values into her own family. Many years were spent teaching Sunday School and Mid-Week activities at the Newton Fellowship Church forging lifelong friendships.

With Jason and Allison gone off to Winnipeg for post-secondary education, Anita still kept busy with birthday parties, game nights, day trips and activities with her group of close friends from the Newton Church.

With the arrival of her grandchildren, Anita was more than thrilled to transition to her role as “Oma” and lovingly doted on Jack, Sophie, Ben and Emily. Family was very important to Anita and she found great joy in time spent with her sisters and brothers in law, and her many nieces and nephews.

Left to cherish her memory is her loving and devoted husband of 48 years, George; son Jason (Melanie) - Jack and Sophie; daughter Allison (Eric) - Benjamin and Emily; Anita’s two sisters Marilyn Redekop of Calgary, AB and Beverley Shier of Winnipeg, MB; along with many treasured nieces, nephews and surviving sisters-in-law and brother-in-law.

The Family would like to thank the Parkside Staff at Lions Prairie Manor for their care and genuine compassion for Anita over the last two years and especially in her last days.

Funeral service will be held at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 1:00 pm. A private family interment will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date.
