Margaret Rose Scott

With sadness, the family of Margaret “Marg” Scott announce her death at the age of 70 on February 26, 2024, peacefully at Portage District General Hospital.

Marg was born on September 17, 1953, in Sarnia, Ontario where she was raised. She happily attended Dunlop United Church (now Dunlop Central). She began feeling a call to ministry as a camp staff member at the Lambton United Church Center. She studied to be Commissioned as a Diaconal Minister in the United Church of Canada. She was particularly proud of that designation.

Marg served in diverse ministry positions at Cookes-Portsmouth UC (Kingston, ON), Bethany-Pontypool Pastoral Charge (near Peterborough, ON), Alma College (St. Thomas, ON), Eden U.C. (Mississauga, ON), St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (Sarnia, On), Metropolitan UC (London, ON), Siloam UC (London, ON) and McKenzie UC (Portage la Prairie, MB).

Marg established deep roots in Portage la Prairie while she served at McKenzie UC over her last fifteen years in ministry. She continued to serve others in the larger community in her retirement years.

Marg was predeceased by her parents Albert and Margaret (nee McCreadie) and sister-in-law Ann Scott. She is survived by her brothers John (Sheila) and George, niece Sherri Atkinson (Mike), nephew Dave (Shauna), great niece Laurenn Simmons (Keil), great nephews Jesse Atkinson (Kassidy), Cameron Scott, and Darren Scott, and great-great nieces Bowie and Ireland and great- great nephew Ocean.

Marg leaves behind numerous cousins and their families but none as dear as her cousin Cathy Cook and her husband Dennis and their family. They were closer than many sisters or brothers.

Marg loved her family, followed their lives closely and spent years researching her family tree. As her mobility declined, she became more active on social media and was in contact with family, former students, and parishioners around the world!

We appreciate the gift of support from Ben and Jenn Hermary, who helped Marg with day-to-day living over the past few years. Our hearts are warmed to hear how Jenn and the “church ladies” became Marg’s “tribe” and comforted her in her final days.

We also recognize and appreciate the efforts of the staff of Portage General in her final weeks.

Thanks as well to Rev. Julie Baker of Trinity United and Jeff Dubois of McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who have helped the family navigate this difficult time.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Church on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at 1:30 pm. The service will be livestreamed by zoom and recorded, to view service go to Marg’s obituary page at http://www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com

Donations to the general fund of McKenzie United Church (Portage la Prairie), 85-11th St, NW, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 2S2 would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. http://www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
