A recent phone scam in Portage has lead to an RCMP advisory in the area.

An undisclosed amount of funds were taken advantage of after a resident provided a credit card number to a male caller who identified himself as a Crimestoppers representative seeking donations.

According to constable Dave Spakowski that isn't how Crimestoppers works.  Crimestoppers confirms they only canvass in person and with appropriate identification.

Spakowski feels there's a lot of residents who do take scam-preventative measures for granted, advising you to keep personal information confidential.  Though phone scams aren't common in the area, it does happen occasionally.
