The growing popularity of a volunteer credit is being applauded by the principal of Portage Collegiate Institute.

The volunteer program is relatively new, and only attracted five or six students when it was first introduced.  Now principal Jim Pehura calls the amount of students looking to obtain the credit significant.  The program's only in its second year and currently has 42 students enrolled -- that's about ten per cent of the student population.

While the program only requires 110 hours of service, Pehura has noticed the completing students continue to volunteer.

He uses the observation to counter doubts the program isn't genuine.
