The RCMP has released the weekly report for the period between March 18 until March 24. The report covers Portage la Prairie, Treherne, Amaranth and the surrounding Rural Municipalities.

Just before 12:00 p.m. on March 18, an Amaranth RCMP officer was making patrols, when they recognized a vehicle from previous traffic stops. The officer initiated a traffic stop with the vehicle, which pulled into a driveway. The driver was known to the officer and knew the driver to be prohibited from driving a motor vehicle Canada-wide. 

The officer told the driver he was under arrest, but the driver entered the residence and failed to comply with the officer's demands. The 32-year-old man from Amaranth was placed under arrest.

The driver faces a Criminal Code of Canada charge of Driving While Prohibited and Resisting Arrest. He also received two tickets totaling $970.00. The vehicle he was driving was towed and impounded for 30-days, however, was extended to 90-days. 

The driver appeared in court the following day.


On March 23, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Portage RCMP received a call of an assault in progress at a building on 5th Street SE.

Officers attended and were taken to where the suspect remained. 25-year-old Riley Saxon of Winnipeg was placed under arrest. Saxon is charged with Assault, Assault While Choking and Causing a Disturbance.

Saxon was brought into custody to appear in court on March 25. None of the victims were seriously injured.


Calls for police service totalled 213, which is an increase from the 199 calls the previous week.

Under Traffic Violations, there were 44 Highway Traffic Act reports, 2 Vehicle Collisions and 0 reports of Impaired Drivers. 

Crimes Against Person reports included 7 Assaults, 3 Assaults with a Weapon and 1 report of Uttering Threats. 

Crimes Against Property detailed 10 Thefts, 1 Theft of a Motor Vehicle, 4 reports of Breaking and Entering and 9 calls regarding Mischief. 

Other statistics included 45 calls for Other Criminal Investigations and 51 for "Other Police Activity," meaning False Alarms, Suspicious People or Vehicles, and Assistance Given.
