The RM of Portage la Prairie ended 2015 on a high note. Reeve Kam Blight explains they ended the year off with a surplus of around $333,000.

"We did have a surplus of roughly $333,000. That number is largely because the person who won the tender to crush our gravel this year did not fulfill all of the commitments, therefore we did not pay them the full amount that was owing to them."

He notes a portion of the surplus will be moved ahead into 2016.

"What we have done is we have taken a couple thousand dollars of that and moved it forward to 2016 to help the crushing costs of this year as we will be crushing more gravel this year since we didn't crush nearly as much last year."

Blight notes they feel like they are in a good position.

"It's an excellent position to be in and we are encouraged by this but we understand this could also change quite quickly. There are certain factors that came into play that allowed this to happen but it's nice to know our departments are working hard at trying to stay on course and work efficiently."
