The Central Plains Capitals were on the ice last night in the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League. They were up against the Interlake Lightning in their home opener for the season. In a tough game the Caps managed to get the shutout and defeat Interlake by a score of 4-0.

The Caps came out of the gate strong by netting a trio of goals in the first period. Despite the positive effort, Head Coach Ferdi Nellisen says he thinks the first period was actually their weakest.

"We're happy with the win but we're not totally happy with the way we played," says Nellisen. "We didn't set the tempo the way we wanted to at times. The first period where we scored three goals might have been our worst even though we scored three goals. The girls didn't get much offensive results during the other periods when they actually played better. There's a lot of things we need to step up if we want to be successful."

There would be no scoring in the second. Central Plains notched an empty-netter in the third. Goal scorers for the Caps were Halle Edwards, Cheyenne Davie, Brooke Legault and Taylor Woodward. Megan Beswitherick picked up the shutout by stopping all 20 shots against her.

With their first game in the books, the Caps have no turnaround as they will face the newly re-formed Winnipeg Ice today at the BDO Centre. Nellisen talks about what they need to do to pick up the win.

"It's our rink and we want to establish the things we want to do right off the hop," says Nellisen. "We want to get a good fore check going, we're supporting all over the ice, winning battles and being on the right side. At times we got away from that last night."

Puck drop is set for 4:00 pm.
