As the new year begins, citizens in Portage la Prairie are encouraged by the city to recycle their Christmas trees in the proper fashion.

Superintendent of Public Works for the City of Portage, Brian Taylor, explains.

"The tree program runs from January 2nd until January 23rd," Taylor shares. "The residents can put their tree out to on the curbside with their garbage. And we will try to get it picked up on the garbage day. It might not happen(the same day), depends on condition, but we definitely will pick them up and recycle them."

Taylor goes on to offer an alternative solution for people who are in a rush to dispose of their trees.

"If somebody is in a hurry to get rid of their tree, they can also drop it off at the burn site behind the wastewater Pollution Control facility."
