A generous gift from the Portage Mutual Insurance Company is going to help the Country Lane Quilters Guild create more quilts for the community.

Co-President of the guild, Cathy Pedden, says they received a cheque of $2,500 which will go toward the buying of materials. Pedden says they have made 250 over the last year and the fabric, batting, backing and more can get pretty expensive.

"Locally, we give quilts to the women's shelter here in town. We provide quilts for the Family First program so that nurses can have a gift to give when they go and visit new moms."

In 2022, Portage quilts went national and international, as the guild created so many quilts they had extras. Pedden says they keep as many quilts local as they can, but they found themselves in a position to stretch their help even further.

"We, this year, provided quilts to Quilts for Ukraine, that we sent to Winkler, and they distributed them," says Pedden. "For a number of years now, we have also been part of Victoria Quilts, which is quilts that are given to people that have cancer."

The guild is always looking for more members. They meet on the third Tuesday of every month at the Herman Prior Activity Centre. You can check out their Facebook page here.
