The Portage Learning and Literacy Centre has been allowing youth the opportunity to learn skills required in the workplace as part of their Work Experience program.

It's designed to allow youth ages, 15-30, four weeks of paid work so they can learn the tools needed to succeed in the workplace. Samantha Prince-Maud was given the opportunity to work alongside the Family Resource Centre as an assistant/receptionist.

"The experience has been good for me. I've been learning a lot," explains Prince-Maud. "I help with programs, and I also just started running my own ID clinic as well, so I've been constantly learning."

She adds the program has helped her grow both personally as well as professionally. She notes the PLLC will sit down with you and let you discuss what type of work you're wanting to do during your time in the program. She explains she's very outgoing and loves to work with kids, so the Family Resource Centre was a perfect fit.

"There's actually going to be another program starting in January," says Prince-Maud. "I just encourage others to do it -- Those who are willing to work, and who want to make a difference for themselves."

The PLLC works with employers from around the city and reimburses at minimum wage following the training portion of the program.

She stresses shyness can be a huge weakness and she says you should try to push past it to grow your potential.

"You have to start moving differently because old keys don't unlock new doors," says Prince-Maud.
