Portage la Prairie City Council. June10th

A massive review of fire services in Portage la Prairie is on the way. City Council has approved having Behr Energy, out of Calgary, review and identify potential service improvement opportunities.

The review would take about 16 weeks to complete at a cost of $45,000, plus GST and an additional $15,000 in expenses to accomplish the project. Councillor Ryan Espey says the review will create a more efficient operation for the city and the fire service agreement with the R.M.

"Everything you can possibly imagine to do with the department, they're going to review and tell us where we can make improvements, efficiencies and things of that nature." says Espey.

Behr Energy and G Squared Business Solutions, based out of Brandon bid on the contract. G Squared was the lowest bidder, but administration recommended Behr Energy be selected, as it's demonstrated extensive experience within the fire service industry from all involved consultants within the Behr Team. They've also demonstrated a greater understanding of the work expected by the City.

The City and the R.M. have negotiated a cost sharing agreement for the execution of this project. Based on the last five years of service, the R.M. has paid an average of 13.19% of the total City expenditures as it relates to fire service. Therefore it was agreed that the R.M. would pay 13.19% of the total cost for this project.
