A controversial ending to the Battle of the Badges at Stride Place on Friday night.

After some trading of players in the third period, some shenanigans with the scoreboard, and a late penalty shot awarded in the third period, the Portage la Prairie Firefighters were winners in a shootout 14-13.

The RCMP hockey team had been leading big, but the firefighters shot the pucks so fast in the final frame, that you couldn't even see the pucks hit the back of the net. However, they must have scored, due to the fact the scoreboard said 13-12 with four seconds left. It was at this time that a firefighter was hooked, and was awarded a penalty shot. He would deke out the officer in net, and would tie the game.

The firefighters scored twice in the shootout, while the officers only scored once.

Corporal Brett Montour of the RCMP joked after the game that the result would be under investigation.

"Just to see the people in the stands, we didn't even know what to expect," says Corporal Montour, who organized the event. "If we can raise any money for our youth and just give back to them, firefighters feel the same way. It's fantastic that we're able to do that."

He says they needed to look far and wide to fill the teams.

"We had a couple of guys come from different locations, Winnipeg and Brandon, to step up so we can make it happen because we just don't have the amount of players here to do that," says Corporal Brett Montour.

He says they hope to do the event again soon, saying the result next time will be different.

That being said, both teams celebrated the event's success after the game, as the money raised was the only number that mattered to anyone. The Battle of the Badges raised $1,800.00 for Recreation Opportunities for Kids Central.
