Roy Tufford, Rm Councilor For Ward 4 and Head of The Finance Committee

As flood waters begin to recede in some areas, residents are beginning to think about removing sandbags from their properties. Rural Municipality of Portage Councilor Roy Tufford, who is Head of their Finance Committee, says for those wishing to get rid of the bags the RM has two sites for collection. One is the old K and G Mushroom shop and the other is the old sugar beet location, near Newton on Road 72 and Highway number One.

Tufford notes many have chosen to remove the bags themselves and get paid for their hours worked, but says for those who don't have time, they can choose to have a contractor do it and be compensated by the Flood Recovery Office.

He notes many wish to remove the bags because they feel they are damaging their grass and landscapes.

He explains the extra sand can be helpful as it makes great fill for holes in your lawn, and adds he would use the available sand and throw away the bags.
