Visions of Independence (VOI) in Portage la Prairie recently held its first AGM in person since the pandemic, and they celebrated with a dinner and dance.

Executive director Jennifer Hagedorn outlines the last year and the benefit of being back together again.

"I think it was something we all needed -- that connection that's been missing for several years," says Hagedorn. "I think it was just wonderful to have everybody come out, get to see each other in person."

She notes the lapse of in-person meetings caused them to forget little things among the many routine details that accompany an AGM, including photographer and other similar points.

Hagedorn explains the past year definitely had its challenges.

"I think we really rose to the occasion," notes Hagedorn. "It's been an interesting year. It's been a challenging year, but I think it's been a year of hope. So, we're finally seeing the end of what we were living through, and we're starting to do normal things again if that's the right word for it. It's so great to see people and be with people."

The organization honoured some long-time employees as well as some new volunteers.

"We tend to be a high turnover sector," adds Hagedorn. "To be able to celebrate 10 to 15 years with people who have been here in a company, and it's only 22 years old, it is what makes it go around."

Hagedorn notes that VOI would not be who they are without those people.

The evening included a motion to welcome a new Board member, Randi Kehler. Board members who are stepping down include Cathy Bator and Glenn Jones.
