The province is moving on recommendations to improve safety and energy efficiency in new homes.

Provincial Deputy Fire Commissioner Chris Jones says starting October 1st, all new homes must have a fire resistant wall between an attached garage and the rest of the building.

Attached garages must also contain heat detectors that are connected to a home's smoke detector system.

Insulation values will increase from R-12 to R-20. Jones points to the deaths of two fire captains in Winnipeg as the catalyst for change.

It's been nearly a year since Harold Lessard and Tom Nichols died in the Winnipeg house fire.
