Helen was born June 10, 1931, the fifth child of eleven to Fred and Anna (nee Sendersky) Tomiuk. She was raised and received her education in Winnipeg and North Springfield, Manitoba. Following her completion of grade 9, which was a big deal way back when, Helen went to work at Alsip Brick Tile and Lumber Company in 1948 where she met the love of her life, Roland Smart. In September of 1950 they married. Within 2 years their first child Elizabeth was born, and there followed Barbara, Gloria and Edward.  A transfer to Portage la Prairie in 1953 had Rollie continuing his employment with Alsip Brick Tile and Lumber, and then later with Campbell Soup. During this time Helen was seasonally employed at the Goodale Potato Farm, and when the children were school age she worked at the Sewing Factory, Campbell Soup, the Manitoba School and then the Portage General Hospital.

Mom was a loving, caring person who put her family first and was always there when needed. In her younger years she did embroidery, knitting, sewing and lastly baking and cooking, sharing with the family produce from the garden and putting up countless sealers of fruits, pickles and veggies. She especially loved her roses which she was proud of.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 301 - 352 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R1N 2HB or to the charity of one’s choice.
