Helen Strelic (nee Bereza)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our loving Mother surrounded by family on September 04, 2023 at Douglas Campbell Lodge following a short illness at the age of 91.  Mom was born June 20, 1932 daughter of Nellie and Andrew Bereza in Russell, MB.

Mom will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her daughters Patricia and Nancy and son-in-law Kenny Saunders, sister-in-laws Carol Bereza and Jean Strilec.  She was predeceased by her loving husband Paul in 1994, her mother Nellie and father Andrew Bereza,  brothers; Michael (Mac) and sister-in law Barbara Bereza and Billy (Bob) Bereza. She also leaves to mourn her passing numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mom was born in Russell, MB and later the family moved to Portage la Prairie, MB where she was raised and received her education. She married Paul in 1955, making their home in Portage la Prairie where they raised their two daughters.  She commenced employment at Manitoba Developmental Centre in the administration field in 1973 and retired in 1996.

Mom enjoyed her retirement years spending time doing what she loved best; entertaining family and hosting her favourite holiday gatherings and always looking for new recipes.  She also enjoyed playing Bingo and going to the casino with family and friends.  Her pets were always special to her and throughout the years there were many.

Mom was a faithful member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Portage la Prairie.  She was also an active member of the Women’s League and enjoyed working in the kitchen for caterings.

Mom was very committed to her home, family and church.  She had a gentle and kind soul and a smile that would brighten up a room. Mom always looked forward to the daily calls from her very special friend, Vera Drabot.  She was a wonderful and devoted Mother who will be missed beyond words.

Mom moved into Douglas Campbell Lodge in July 2021.  She adapted and loved her new home, making new friends and the wonderful care from the staff. The family cannot thank the staff enough for the love and care they provided.
