A Portage Collegiate student was named a finalist for a major provincial award.

Seth Prince was the nominee for this region for the Association of Manitoba Municipalities George Harbottle Memorial Award.

Prince has come up with several ideas for his school to encourage others.

"I started (these) field trips, based on an award system," says Prince. "If you have been going to class, and regularly are trying to get your work done, you get to go on a trip. That's been working really well. I notice a lot of my friends are going to class more."

He says he enjoys standing up for what he believes in, and credits his parents for getting him to do more, and to use his voice.

"I've always had a passion for speaking," says Prince. "I have a passion for speaking for Indigenous rights."

Prince was among many in attendance in Winnipeg at the Manitoba School Boards Association Student Citizenship Awards.

As it turned out, Prince didn't win the award.  The winner of the George Memorial Harbottle award was Milah Mikkelsen, in the Rolling River School Division.
