Portage la Prairie area farmers are pretty much done their seeding, and things are looking fairly well this time of year. Kevin Yuill owns Lake Manitoba Seed Company Ltd., and outlines his current progress.

Kevin Yuill "The warmth today will help get stuff moving," says Yuill. "Beans are just popping out of the ground today. Soybeans are just nicely up, and canola's a little patchy because it was just a little too cold for too long while it was in the ground. Corn's looking good, so we're taking it one step at a time."

Yuill says he has a little bit of seeding left to do in wet-hole areas, but he basically finished ten days ago. He explains they could use some warmth to get the crop moving, and notes that seems to be what the forecast is calling for. Yuill adds the markets are a little soft right now, but seeing as they're not selling for a little while yet, he'll wait and see how it fares.

"We had a nice little shower here in the last few days that helped make moisture meet top and bottom," says Yuill, remarking about rain. "Essentially, we don't need any more rain for a while. Our sub-soil moisture's very high. Once the crop gets going it could use a little more, but we certainly don't need much right now."
