Louise Greenaway (nee Fairbairn)

It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Louise Greenaway on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at the Douglas Campbell Lodge at the age of 79 years.

Louise is predeceased by her husband, John Greenaway, parents George and Verna Fairbairn and siblings Betty Egan, Gladys Fairbairn and Frank Fairbairn.

Left to remember a life well lived are daughters Jennifer (Dave) Little and Jacquie (Craig) Bennet; grandsons Laird Little and Leyton Bennet; granddaughters Erin and Amy Little. She also leaves to mourn very special friend, Shirley Nisbet, as well as many other dear friends.

Louise was born September 6, 1944, to George and Verna Fairbairn, a much younger sister to Betty, Gladys and Frank. She grew up in Portage, and also raised her daughters here as a single mom.  Those years demonstrated her strength, love and commitment to her children; they were always her priority.  She also had a very strong faith which carried her through her most challenging times.  As the girls grew older there was time for travel, reading, music, and walking. Many people will remember seeing her walking along Crescent Lake.  She put on miles and would always finish every walk with a stiff cup of tea and an appreciation of good health.

Mom was always thankful for her family and appreciated every gesture of love and care, and even more so as her health declined.  Her demands were few, she was never one to complain.  She wished to stay longer but was content with getting most of what she had wanted from life – to serve others and live her life fully in the simple, small details.  She touched the lives and warmed the hearts of many.

Having grandchildren completed her life, and she wanted to live long enough for them to get to know her. Laird, Erin, Amy and Leyton - she is so happy to have been your Nanny. Her wish for you is to live lives with meaning and purpose.

She really has left this world a better place for having been in it.  Thank you, mom, for the tremendous joy you brought us, caring for you has been a true privilege.

A celebration of Louise’s life will be held at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at 1:00 pm followed by a reception. Those who would like to attend, please wear blue, or even just a splash of blue, Louise’s favourite colour.  The interment will follow the reception at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

Louise's family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Douglas Campbell Lodge for the attentive and loving care she received while there, even if for a short while.  They took such care getting to know her so that they could offer her their best.  We are so grateful.

As an expression of condolence, donations can be made in Louise’s memory to the Douglas Campbell Lodge c/o the Portage District General Hospital Foundation 524-5th Street SE, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3A8 or to PAWS 121 – 12th St. N.E. Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 4A2.
