Portage's annual fair traditionally draws visitors to the city from across the province. One of the people in town Saturday for the start of the 134th Portagex was Manitoba Progressive Conservative leader Hugh McFadyen.

The rookie MP says he's planning to travel the province extensively over the summer months to meet with people and hear their comments and concerns. So far, he says many are telling him Manitoba's crumbling roads need to be fixed.

The PC leader is also overseeing candidate nominations in various ridings held by the NDP, and is working on the party's next policy booklet.

While McFadyen says a recent poll that has the PC Party leading the NDP is encouraging, he says the party will have to work hard to carry that support through to the next election.
