Manitoba Public Insurance’s data says that impaired driving was the leading factor in 18 road deaths in the province as of the end of October. With this in mind, MPI wants to remind you to drive safe and drive sober this holiday season. Media Relations Coordinator Brian Smiley has more.

“I think we would all agree that 18 is far too many (deaths),” says Smiley “It tells us that people are still choosing to drink and drive which we know is not only dangerous but it is also against the law.”

Smiley says Manitobans will have to be extra careful and safe this year as COVID-19 has put a hold on Operation Red Nose this year.

“Unfortunately, due to social distancing and health orders, the Operation Red Nose program has taken a one-year hiatus,” Smiley explains. “That was a program where people could call Operation Red Nose in their area and get a safe drive home. That program is not being offered now so there is more of an onus on drivers to be safe. Do not consume alcohol or smoke drugs while driving.”

Smiley adds if you are under the influence of any kind, either make sure you have a designated driver or a plan to stay somewhere safe and nearby.

He notes, even though COVID-19, they have still made sure they spread awareness on the harm drunk driving can cause to students.

“MPI has resumed its annual ‘Friends For Life’ series. That’s where speakers who have made decisions that haven’t been positive, will go into schools and speak to students about their decisions and how those decisions affected their lives. This is now being done virtually in the schools that are participating. We’re very happy to be able to get this message out to the students.”

Manitoba has seen 73 total fatalities on public roadways as of October. Smiley wants everyone to stay safe and drive sober this holiday season so that number doesn’t get much higher.
