Eight communities have received provincial orders to begin fogging for mosquitoes, to prevent West Nile disease from spreading.

Headingley and Carman are among them, but so far no such orders have been issued in the Portage region.

Gladstone Mayor Eileen Clarke points out they're carrying out a larviciding program, and it seems to be keeping the bugs' numbers down. She calls it a manageable situation.

Larviciding is also under way in MacGregor, and Mayor Doris Moore is convinced it's a factor in keeping the village relatively mosquito-free. She adds they're prepared for fogging operations if the province orders them.

Steve Kiefer, the mayor of St. Claude, says they don't have a budget for mosquito control, but so far they've had no problems. He hopes Mother Nature will help them through the rest of the season.
