Last weekend saw a harvest celebration in Portage, with its roots in southern India.

It's called Onam, and has a long history.

Jins K tells us its exact age isn't known, but they've marked the occasion here since 2006.

"I'm just new to this place," he says. "So since then they've done the celebration here, and they are celebrating Onam like this."

Jins adds there's another significance for Onam.

"In Onam, the person called Mahabali, the king who is coming back from underground to heaven," he says. "So we are celebrating Onam in such a way."

He says Onam's particularly special his community now.

"We are far away from there (south India)," he says, "And it's like we feel like we are now in our home. You can see in my face, I'm very happy today. That's called Onam."
