A new face will be in Parliament from Portage-Lisgar after the next federal election.

Current MP Brian Pallister announced this morning he won't seek re-election in order to establish greater stability for his family. He spent 16 years in politics, at the provincial and federal levels, and has several highlights.

Pallister was inspired to enter politics after Southport's site-specific flight training designation was achieved in the early 90's. He feels election night 2006 was a highlight, as was helping constituents overcome issues.

Pallister says it was a difficult decision, adding he's honoured to have served so long. He notes the process began two years ago, when he considered running for the provincial Conservatives, and realized he didn't want to make more long-term commitments.

Pallister stresses he's not going to pursue politics at any other levels.

Portage Mayor Ken Brennan notes the news is unexpected. He describes Pallister as a hard worker in his provincial and federal service.

Brennan notes the efforts he has put in for our area can be tiring, adding it means a lot of time travelling and away from family for Pallister. He extends his appreciation for Pallister's hard work on behalf of those he represented, and wishes him the best of luck in his retirement.

RM of Portage Reeve Toby Trimble is surprised at the announcement. He points out Pallister has worked hard for the constituency and has always given his best effort.

He believes Pallister has the constituency at heart, and is sure his decision to step down from the next election is valid.

Trimble adds the RM worked with Pallister on a number of projects, adding he doesn't think the move is
