Some PCI students recently got a chance to try their hand at ice fishing. Resource Teacher Darren Reichert says 16 students went to Delta Beach and onto Lake Manitoba on March 20th. It was funded by Community Foundation of Portage and District.

"We partnered with our Envirothon program at the school," notes Reichert. "Some of the kids from that group also joined us. It was an interesting day. Many of the kids never fished before, and certainly hadn't ice fished before. So, it was a learning process for a lot of them. We were lucky enough to have a conservation officer join us. Rory MacLellan spent the day with us."

He explains MacLellan provided information and answered questions for the students.

Reichert notes it was the first ice fishing venture for PCI, and plan to keep it going as well as do more outings on the ice and Assiniboine River shore fishing. Many guest speakers are involved such as Don Lamont, Editor of Hook Magazine, and former TV host of The Complete Angler. Chris Chorney is also scheduled to pay a visit, a local angler who works for Tourism Manitoba. Reichert says Chorney will help them make lures and catfish rigs as well as walleye spinners and harnesses.

One fish alone, but worth the trip!

He says he thanks CFPD for the grant, and support from local businesses like MacDonald Sporting Goods for rods and reels, as well as many individuals who've helped out, including Stacy Turner in getting donations.
