The Portage Friendship Centre's up to its deadline tomorrow for you to donate school items for students who don't have enough for classes this year. Administrative assistant Katt Rossiter explains how the program is going this year.

"Very slowly this year," says Rossiter. "There was a change of staff right in the middle of getting it launched. We've struggled to get the word out there. This year there are some people who misunderstand and are expecting us to donate school supplies to them personally. We want the community to know we are accepting the donations."

She adds the Centre then will donate the items to the school division.

You can drop off donations at RBC, Stride Credit Union, Kal Tire, Canadian Tire and Mayfair Print Shoppe in Portage.

Tomorrow's the deadline and the Centre's also holding a Picnic at the Park for kids at Island Park's duck pond pavilion at 1:00 p.m. There'll be activities for kids, and a ticket in costs a donation of school supplies.
