On Thursday, March 19, at about 3:30 p.m., Manitoba First Nations Police Officers were returning to the Long Plain First Nation.

On Highway 1, along the junction of Highway 16 and 1, a semi-truck passed the police unit at a high rate of speed and failed to stop for a red light, at the intersection. Police activated their emergency equipment and pulled the semi-truck over.

Upon speaking with the semi driver, Police noticed his demeanour was unusual and suspicious. A check of the interior of the semi-truck were 5 cases of various brands of contraband tobacco, totaling 51,000 cigarettes and 114 grams of packaged Cannabis Marijuana.

The driver was arrested under the Tobacco Tax and Cannabis Act and was released on an Appearance Notice, to appear for court on May 20, 2020, in Winnipeg, MB.

The investigation is ongoing and the accused is facing charges totaling $45,000 in fines, as well as a charge under the Criminal Code of Canada.
