We're in the middle of the May long weekend, and it means there's a lot of traffic on our highways.

Portage RCMP Sergeant Brian Brewer recommends caution as you drive, and to be on the lookout for aggressive drivers.

He adds if you're tempted to drive aggressively, there are consequences.

"In the first instance, you have Careless Driving and Imprudent Driving under the Highway Traffic Act," he says, "But if it can get more serious, depending on how dangerous or aggressive you're driving. It can lead to a Criminal Code charge, a criminal record, and in some cases, it can lead to some prison time."

Brewer's seen the results of aggressive driving, first-hand.

"Someone was in a hurry, and trying to pass," he remembers, "And unfortunately, they pulled out, right into the path of a semi-trailer. It was a horrific head-on collision, and ultimately it came down to someone being aggressive, and wound up losing their lives."

Brewer stresses it's not worth putting yourself and others at risk by being overly aggressive.
