Portage la Prairie RCMP officers were kept busy as September came to a close, responding to more than 300 calls for service between September 21st and 30th.

During that time, Mounties handled several notable incidents, including an assault investigation that led to two arrests, and a separate impaired driving incident downtown.

Between September 21st and 30th, officers logged daily call volumes ranging from 22 to 56 calls, with September 22nd being the busiest day of the stretch.

Assault complaint leads to two arrests

On the morning of September 26th, RCMP responded to a report of a possible assault at a residence on 9th Street Southwest.

When officers arrived, they were met by a woman who claimed to be alone. To ensure her safety, police entered the home and located a man hiding in a bedroom. The man was found to be breaching multiple court conditions and was taken into custody.

While officers were escorting the man from the residence, the woman allegedly became combative and attempted to interfere with the arrest. Police say she ignored repeated commands to comply and was arrested as well after threatening officers.

Thirty-one-year-old Shelby Genaille has been charged with two counts of resisting or obstructing a peace officer, assault on a police officer, and uttering threats.

Twenty-three-year-old Brayden Hall has been charged with three counts of failing to comply with a release order.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing.

Impaired driver arrested after speeding through downtown

In another incident, just after 2 a.m. on September 28th, officers observed a vehicle speeding through the intersection of 4th Street Northwest and Saskatchewan Avenue.

The driver slowed down after police activated their lights and eventually stopped near 2nd Street Northwest. Officers say two women were inside the vehicle, and when the driver failed to produce identification, she was arrested.

Empty alcohol containers were also found inside the vehicle.

Twenty-four-year-old Naomi Miness, from Portage la Prairie, has been charged with impaired operation and operation over 80 milligrams. She was also issued four tickets under the Highway Traffic Act.

Her 23-year-old passenger was arrested for breaching conditions related to alcohol consumption.

Police remind the public to always plan ahead and never drive impaired.
