A proposed gas bar was the subject of much discussion at Tuesday's RM of Portage la Prairie council meeting.

Reeve Kam Blight says a local business wanted to have one situated on their lot, and outlines council's subsequent decisions.

"Days Inn has applied for a conditional use to allow the construction of a gas station (and) coffee kiosk right to the east of the current Days Inn location," says Blight. "We discussed some of the issues that were brought forward by council and other individuals' concerns via correspondence and those who attended the public hearing. They included the environmental impacts, the close proximity to the Assiniboine River, the close proximity to the Trans Canada Highway, and of course, the increase in potential traffic at the Yellowquill Trail."

Blight explains the intersection on the Trans-Canada bypass is infamous for dangerous accidents and has already claimed too many lives, as well as being a bit of a dangerous crossing. So he says, adding extra traffic is a concern at this time.

He notes the ultimate decision of the council was to deny the conditional use application.

"Unfortunately, there was no representation for in attendance at the public hearing to provide any more information and provide clarification to some of our questions and concerns," continues Blight. "The application was somewhat vague as we're not even certain exactly what the proposed gas station would be. Is that a truck stop? Is it a truck station, or is it just strictly a small passenger vehicle station?"
