The Westpark Royals enjoyed a successful run as the host of the Manitoba 'AA' Varsity Boys Basketball Provincial Tournament.

The Royals fell in the consolation final this morning 92-56 to the William Morton Warriors. Despite the tough ending, Westpark played hard defensively throughout the entire game. Guard Aden Fawcett says they aren't the type of team that ever stops trying.

"We didn't want to give up even though we were down. We just fought the whole way through," Fawcett explains. "Our goal was to keep it a close game and never give up since it was our last game of the season."

Overall, the Royals had a record of 2-2 throughout the course of the tournament, while receiving heavy support from the home fans in every contest. Fawcett says it was unreal to be able to play in a tournament of this calibre in their own gym.

"It was awesome and the fans were amazing," Fawcett explains. "It was awesome to have the gym so loud and to hear all of the chants. It just felt really cool hosting the tournament here."

With only one graduating player on this Royals roster, the Westpark squad will be using this experience to fuel them into next season. Fawcett outlines the main things they learned from this tournament.

"It's really all about confidence," Fawcett continues. "If you just try your hardest and never give up, you can win any game."

The guard reflects on the year it was for the Royals.

"It was a really great season. As a team, we improved a lot," says Fawcett. "Our defence was really strong throughout the year but especially in this tournament. I think we all improved a lot, which was really great."

Westpark will be saying goodbye to Ethan Stanley next year, however, Fawcett and the rest of the squad will be back for another run in 2023.
