Manitobans are losing sleep due to COVID-19 according to a Leva Sleep Survey.

Founder and Managing Director Matthew Timmons explains otter factors are included as well..

"Across the board, not just in Manitoba, but across Canada, it seems that during COVID, people's sleep has been fragmented," notes Timmons. "I think that can be attributed to a number of factor but most notably COVID and the stress that comes with it. And I think part of it is the fear of the second wave."

He says only 4.7 per cent of Canadians say that they're entertaining in bed, which is quite a bit lower than usual. 36 per cent are sleeping, over 11 per cent are watching TV, 8 per cent are on social media. So, he notes there are many different things that contribute to the sleeplessness, but people are definitely sleeping a lot less than usual.

"Close to a quarter of Canadians say that their bed is in need of an upgrade," adds Timmons. "We've noticed that in our industry that we've been busier than ever, I think because people are just not going on vacation any more, people are stuck at home, everyone is looking at giving their house and specifically their bedroom an upgrade. And we've seen quite an uptick during COVID which is a little bit of a surprise."

Timmons also notes that politics is keeping many Canadians awake, but it's not Canadian politics. It's concerns of what's happening south of the border with the 2020 US election.

Among stats closer to home, he notes 28.1 per cent of Manitobans reported the current crisis is what’s keeping them up at night. Timmons says they are even more concerned with the second wave of COVID, with 31.4 per cent explaining that’s what's really keeping them awake at night.

Manitobans are also spending the least amount of time in bed compared to the rest of the country, says Timmons, and only 22.5 per cent of Manitobans report spending more time in bed since COVID broke out. He adds Manitobans are spending more time on the couch -- at 51.1 per cent -- than any other place in their homes.
