UPDATE - all highways in Manitoba have reopened as of 10:10 a.m.

-------------------------------------------

Spring break is over and April is here. And following some freezing rain, wet snow and ice yesterday, things feel anything but spring-like.

Highway conditions are less than desirable this morning and roads around Portage are icy.

Higher amounts of snow fell to the west and the Trans-Canada highway is closed between Austin and Branon and then on to the Saskatchewan border. Highway 2 is also closed in western Manitoba west from junction Highway 21 to Pipestone and on to Saskatchewan. Yesterday, traffic was moving at around 50 km/h in both directions between MacGregor and Brandon and as the day moved along conditions deteriorated even more forcing officials to shut things down. Many of the school divisions in those areas have closed schools for the day as well.

The rain and snow started yesterday afternoon and winter storm watches along with snowfall warnings were issued Saturday in advance of the system. In fact the storm watch continues for most of the area as a  Colorado Low is poised to impact parts of southern Manitoba Tuesday afternoon through to Thursday morning as well. While the exact track of the low pressure system will change as the event onset nears, general amounts of 15 to 25 cm of snow appear likely. The highest confidence for heavy snow lies over the southeastern corner of Manitoba with the chance decreasing farther to the northwest. The region was also hammered with heavy snow and wind last year on Easter weekend although this year it appears the snow should have passed through the area by the weekend.
