It's round two of a major winter storm that is passing through Southern Manitoba and the Central Plains.

Light drizzle started around 5:30 a.m. and the day is expected to bring drizzle, light rain, freezing rain and snow. The wind may gust up to 40 km/h at times and when you add all that together, it usually means slippery roads. In fact that combination of weather was the cause for our first highway closure of the day. The Trans-Canada highway (Highway # 1) closed around 3 a.m. in both directions between Brandon and the Saskatchewan border. That stretch of highway has since reopened however several highways main closed on the Saskatchewan side including the Trans-Canada at Whitewood.

The Portage la Prairie area was mostly spared from round one of the event on Wednesday but that doesn't appear like it is going to be the case today. A snowfall warning is in effect with 10 to 20 cm of the white stuff expected to fall today and a further 5 more cm on Friday. Environment Canada is warning of a slow-moving disturbance impacting the southeastern Prairies and another wave of snow in the region today. The warning suggests moderate to heavy snow will spread northwards into parts of southern Manitoba this morning, then spread eastwards across the Red River Valley and SE Manitoba through the day. Local accumulations in excess of 20 cm may occur in some areas and visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. They are also warning people to be prepared to adjust driving because of quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions through the day.
