The following is a summary of police activity in the Central Plains Area (Portage la Prairie, Treherne, Amaranth and the surrounding Rural Municipalities). The reporting dates are between 2018-02-19 and 2018-02-25. During this time period police responded to 258 calls for service.


BREAK AND ENTER

On February 19th, Treherne RCMP were called to a break and enter to the Notre Dame Arena, believed to have occurred overnight. Property management found that the doors of the arena had been pried open, and that an undisclosed amount of cash had been taken from the canteen. Investigators located forensic evidence at the scene which is being analyzed in order to potentially identify those involved. On February 22nd, at 5:20 a.m. the Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to a break and enter in progress at the CO-OP gas bar on Hwy 1 near Austin. When officers arrived on scene they found that the front doors to the convenience store had been busted open, and that items had been removed. In speaking with witnesses and reviewing security footage, investigators believe that two male suspects arrived in a light coloured Dodge Caravan, broke in, and left within minutes. VEHICLE ROLLOVER

On February 19th, shortly before 9:00 p.m. the Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to a single vehicle rollover on Road 70N in the RM of North Norfolk. Police were advised that the 16-year-old male driver of the vehicle had lost control on the gravel road and went into the ditch. Luckily there were no serious injuries to anyone involved. There have been no charges laid to date; investigators do not believe that alcohol was a factor.


SPEEDING

On February 20th, a motorist was observed travelling at 102 km/h in a 60 km/h construction zone in the RM of Alonsa. The 38-year-old female driver was issued a fine in the amount of $1,149.00, as speed fines are doubled inside construction zones. Police wish to remind everyone to slow down in these areas, as there are hazards even when there appears to be no one at work.

On February 21st, a motorist was observed travelling at 135 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Hwy 16 in the RM of Westlake-Gladstone. The 20-year-old male driver was issued a fine in the amount of $509.00.


IMPAIRED DRIVING

On February 22nd, shortly before 1:00 AM police observed a vehicle travelling on Dufferin Avenue in Portage la Prairie. Given the late hour, officers decided to stop the vehicle to ensure that the driver was properly licensed and to check their level of sobriety. As investigators spoke with the driver, it became clear that the driver had consumed alcohol before getting behind the wheel. The driver reportedly failed a roadside sobriety test, and was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. During the course of the arrest, officers would learn that the driver was also wanted for outstanding charges before the court. The 35-year-old male driver would provide breath samples that were over the legal limit, and subsequently had his driver’s license suspended for a minimum of three (3) months. The vehicle was towed and impounded for a minimum of 30 days at the owner’s expense. The driver was held in custody until such time as he could be brought before the court.

February 24th, shortly before 2:00 a.m. Treherne RCMP observed a pick-up truck leaving Holland, noting that the vehicle had a burnt out headlight. In speaking with the male driver, officers determined that he had consumed alcohol prior to getting behind the wheel. The 29-year-old driver was asked to provide a sample of his breath to a roadside screening device, which he failed. The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and his subsequent breath samples were nearly double the legal limit. The driver had his license suspended for a minimum of three (3) months and the vehicle was towed and impounded for a minimum of 30 days.


STOLEN VEHICLE

On February 22nd, Amaranth RCMP area asking for the assistance of the community in locating a stolen vehicle from Amaranth. A grey 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, last seen with Manitoba license plate HVV 420, was taken from the roadside on Beach Road. Investigators are asking that anyone who may have seen the vehicle to contact the Amaranth RCMP at 204-843-2309, or your local police detachment.

On February 25th, shortly after 1:00 p.m. the Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to a stolen vehicle from the Dollarama parking lot. The vehicle, a green pick-up truck, was parked outside the store while the owner shopped. When they returned to where the vehicle had been, it was gone. Officers would find the vehicle parked in the rural area outside of the city, where they arrested a male driver and female occupant. Both the 45-year-old male and the 35-year-old female had warrants for their arrest in addition to being found in possession of stolen property. Lyle Lilley of Winnipeg, and Tania Pottery of the RM of Portage la Prairie, were held in custody until such time as they could appear before the court.


ARRESTED FOR OUTSTANDING WARRANT

On February 23rd, Portage la Prairie RCMP observed a vehicle driving erratically on 1st Street SW, heading towards Crescent Road. Officers stopped the vehicle and spoke with the female driver, who admitted to having consumed alcohol prior to getting behind the wheel. Investigators asked that the 19-year-old female driver provide a sample of her breath to a roadside screen device. Though the driver passed the roadside test, she was arrested on an outstanding warrant from failing to appear in court as required. The driver was released from police custody a short while later, set to appear again before the court at a later date.
