The City of Portage la Prairie's youth councillor has seen his term extended until August 2016. Donnovan Hillman says he began his first term in February of this year, noting he has a lot of projects on the go so he's happy he'll be able to see them through. Hillman says he's been working with a group of extraordinary people and all of the councillors have been in full support of his ideas and events, adding they're always willing to lend a helping hand if he has any questions. He notes he's learned quite a bit about city policies and by-laws and he's also learned the way council works and what portfolio items he can cover.

Hillman adds he's looking forward to continuing with his projects and bringing forward the concerns and ideas of Portage's youth. He says the position of youth councillor is one where you can choose to either just show up to council meetings and put no further effort into it, or you can take his approach and get actively involved. Hillman notes you can talk to the public and the media, and you can investigate citizens' concerns instead of simply addressing them. He adds it's a tremendous experience getting to work with such excellent people and seeing how municipal government really operates.
