Portage Stampeders seek athletes and volunteers
Ryleigh Lovett, who stepped in as head coach of the Portage Stampeders in September, says the program offers athletes with disabilities a chance to stay active, learn new skills, and enjoy sports together. Practices are held Mondays from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. at the École Arthur Meighen School gym, running until mid-December. “We run practices for athletes with disabilities to be able to participate in sport and learn new sports,” notes Lovett. “Our primary sports would be basketball and track and field, but we do try to learn new sports, too, at practices.” The club has about 15 athletes registered, although not all attend every week. There is space for more participants, and Lovett encourages both new athletes and volunteers to join. “We are looking for more volunteers, and their primary role would be to help with the athletes learn new skills and guide them during practices, which they won't have to run practices, but to help out with each activity going on,” says Lovett. Fulfilling experience for coaches and helpers Lovett explains that being involved with the program has been a meaningful experience, both for athletes and those giving their time. “I have been involved with Special Olympics for three years. This is my first year as head coach,” adds Lovett. “The role is very fulfilling and rewarding to get to see the improvements of the athletes in their events and sports that they participate in. And it's a great opportunity to be able to give back to the community and the athletes from here.” Preparing for competition The fall season focuses on building skills, with competitions starting in the spring. Athletes take part in basketball tournaments and track meets, and many have found success at these events in past years. “In previous years, we've had a lot of success with our athletes and they've done really well,” continues Lovett. “They also have a lot of fun and get to meet all the different athletes from across the province.” Most competitions are held within Manitoba, though there are some opportunities to travel outside the province. “Primarily, it's in Manitoba. And there are some opportunities to go outside of the province, but I have not had any experience with that yet,” says Lovett. Lovett emphasizes that whether someone wants to help, compete, or simply support local athletes, the Stampeders welcome the community’s involvement.
