As we approach the middle of the crop year, farmers are looking at the progress of their crops so far and what they can expect moving forward.

MacGregor area farmer Curtis Sims says in general, most of the crops are doing quite well.

"The wheat is actually looking quite good overall. The corn is really, really growing. The soy beans are recovering, they took quite a yellowing from all this rain we had. They've improved, they're coming along nicely. Canola's doing well, other than there are drowned out spots [...] where it was too wet earlier in the spring."

He notes it appears the yields will be reasonably positive.

"I think the wheat will be pretty good, I think, by the look of most fields. [There are] a couple of wet ones. Soybeans seem to be about average maybe, they got yellowed off a lot. The corn looks like it could be pretty decent."

Sims explains what they could use in terms of weather going forward.

"Mostly sunshine, and some heat after that long, cold spring; it slowed things up a little bit. A little shower wouldn't hurt in a while, we're not hurting but we won't turn down a bit of a shower but no monsoons please."

He adds compared to previous years there has been less rain damage this year. He adds it's also encouraging to see prices on certain crops have recovered.
