The BDO Centre in Portage la Prairie is getting some renovations done to its roof.

At its meeting this week, Portage city council awarded a tender for the application of spray foam for the lobby and west ice shed to URECOAT Inc., a Winnipeg based company at a cost of $184,132.20. Administration's report to council explains the net cost to the city for the job -- including necessary work to remove HVAC units to facilitate the spray foam application and raise a wall to allow for proper roof drainage -- is an estimated $80,000, after factoring in a Canada 150 grant and an available grant from Manitoba Hydro for up to $30,000.

The BDO Centre has been operated by Centennial Community Club Inc. (CCCI) since 2010.

"CCCI has done a great job with the facility, but it still is technically a city building," says Coun. Brent Froese. "As an asset of the city, it's only responsible to keep it in good shape. If you don't have a good roof, the rest of the effort is sort of vulnerable. To exercise stewardship over our facilities, we voted to (approve this)."

CCCI president Shane Moffat says roof issues such as small leaks were identified by the board in recent years, but with the high price tag tied to roof renovations they didn't know how to fund repairs. The spray foam application will provide a waterproof seal to the roof to address the issue.

"This (Canada 150) grant that came up is really huge for the community,” Moffat says. “It's going to be a huge improvement to the place and now that facility should be there for a very long time.”

The work is to be completed before the end of June 2017.

ADDITIONAL RENOVATIONS

Moffat says CCCI is investing $39,000 into the rink for various upgrades, including removing natural gas rooftop heating units and installing new electric heaters for all dressing rooms.
