The Portage la Prairie Fire Department's annual Firefighters Burn Fund Golf Tournament was Thursday at the Portage Golf Club.

Chief Phil Carpenter says they were able to raise just under $5,000 despite a drop in golfers taking part.

"It was another beautiful day as far as weather, and we had some good support from golfers all over. Morden has always been a good supporter of our tournament and they showed well again. The numbers were down a little this year, we ended up with 103 golfers and we're usually we're in the 120 range. It happens, but overall everyone had a lot of fun and I'd like to thank all the businesses that continue to support our event. It wouldn't happen without them."

Carpenter says it's an important fundraiser for them because all the money goes toward a very important cause.

"The fund raises money for treatments and injuries when someone suffers a bad burn," says Carpenter. "We also do some prevention activities with our Fire Safety House that was funded by the Firefighters Burn Fund. We have kid burn camps, where people with burn injuries get together and have a fun weekend."

Those are just some of the activities the Firefighters Burn Fund supports.
