We got a taste of winter in southern Manitoba on Saturday, but that was only the appetizer -- the main course is on the way.

That's from Environment Canada's Rob Paola, who says it's because of a system from the Dakotas.

"And that system is going to be spreading a large area of precipitation over southern Manitoba, and temperatures will be cold enough that the precipitation will be snow for most of us in the Red River Valley, and unfortunately, it will be accumulating through the day Monday, into Monday night, and as mentioned, possibly up to 10 cm for much of the area."

Paola says because Portage is on the western edge of the system, we might see less.

"So perhaps Portage la Prairie may be seeing more like 5 cm, with heavier amounts as you get toward Carman, Headingley, and over toward Winnipeg, and the Red River Valley. But if this system shifts a little further northwest, then Portage could easily get closer to 10 cm."

He tells us what we can expect for the day.

"It should be starting early Monday morning, just as people are going to school or work, so the morning commute shouldn't impacted too much. But the snowfall will pick up in intensity through the day, and into the afternoon, so the drive home is going to be messy. And that snow will continue into Monday evening and Monday night, before it pulls out."
